§ 67-17. Disposition of property lost, stolen or found in prisoners' possession.

  • Property coming into possession of the Police Department which is found, stolen or recovered or alleged or supposed to have been stolen or embezzled, or any species of property whatever found in the possession of persons arrested, shall be delivered forthwith to the officer in charge of police headquarters. He/she shall keep a record thereof with the facts in the case. Property shall be returned to the owner as soon as possible according to law. Property not returned to the owner and not retained as evidence of a crime, where the owner is unidentifiable, must be retained for a minimum of six months. Civilians finding property which is not claimed by the owner may claim the property after the six-month-period. All property not disposed of by the courts or returned to the owner shall be sold by the Borough at public auction at the expiration of six months.
